Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Silver Jubilee Commemoration Commemorative Coins released by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh released commemorative coins to mark the silver jubilee of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) in New Delhi on 31st Jan. 2013.
Governor of Jammu and Kashmir NN Vohra, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah, Dr Karan Singh, president, ICCR, and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar were also present on the occasion.
Three coins of Rs. 25, Rs. 10 and Rs. 5 denomination, with the embossing the logo of SMVDSB, were released by the Prime Minister. Goddess Vaishno Devi is believed to be the eldest deity among the six other Devis whose shrines lie between the Yamuna and the Chenab rivers in north India.
During its 51st meeting of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board on December 28 last, it was informed that to mark the silver jubilee, the Government of India’s approval had been secured for the minting of Proof and Un-Circulated commemorative coin set, besides two billion circulation coins of Rs 5 and Rs 10 denomination. Coins are minted from India Government Mint, Mumbai (A unit of SPMCIL).
The SMVDSB came into being in August 1986 to manage the services and the round-the-year pilgrimage to the highly revered shrine. Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference-led coalition Government later ratified the Governor’s initiative through the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act, 1988. Under the provisions of the law, the Governor acts as Chairman and appoints not more than 10 persons as members of the board.
The main objective of the Act was to provide for better management and governance of the shrine and its endowments, including the appurtenant lands and buildings, previously managed by a private religious body.
An all time high 1.04 crore pilgrims visited holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ji during 2012 recording an increase of 3.79 lakh over 2011.
